Building Material

About

Building material consists of debris left over from a construction, remodeling, or demolition project. This includes plywood, lumber, pipe, drywall, ductwork, shingles, concrete and bricks. In the past, this material went to the landfill. Now, there are many recycling options.

WHAT'S NEW ON BUILDING MATERIAL?

The City of Madison has a new ordinance that requires the recycling of building material from any remodeling project costing more than $20,000. The ordinance also requires that all shingles be recycled from any project where they are being removed. If you have a project that is subject to this ordinance you will be given information about recycling when you receive your building permit. If you are interested in recycling the material from small projects you will find a list of recyclers at http://www.cityofmadison.com/streets or you can call the City recycling office at 267-2626.

To Donate Your Unneeded or Used Building Material: Please check with Habitat for Humanity prior to making a donation. This is also an excellent place to find bargain materials for your home improvement projects.

Recycling Alternatives: Mixed Loads of Construction Material can be recycled at three facilities in the Madison area. All firms will sort the material and recycle 60% to 80% of the material. And, even better news, they will charge less than the landfill to take your material.

The mixed load recyclers are:

  • Royal Container, 4197 Reardon Rd., DeForest, 221-1919,
  • Second Season Recycling, 2159 Range Trail Rd., Verona, 848-4400
  • Symmetry Recycling 4907 Dutch Mill Rd., Madison, 239-0898.

Concrete can be recycled by:

  • Wingra Stone (271-5555)
  • Mandt Sandfill (835-5858)
  • Northwestern Stone (836-1701)

Northwestern Stone and Mandt Sandfill will also take bricks.

Asphalt can be recycled by:

  • DRS (836-6667)
  • Payne and Dolan (845-8900)
  • Mandt Sandfill (835-5858)

Asphalt Shingles can be taken to:

  • Second Season (845-8900)
  • Roof Top Recycling (262-723-2547)
  • Royal Container (608-221-1919)

Drywall can be recycled by the Drywall Scrap Company (206-6549) or the mixed load recyclers listed above.
