Ontario Residences

Ontario Power Authority Fridge and Freezer Pick Up

If you have a fridge or freezer that is 15 years or older, Ontario Power Aurthority will pick up and recycle the appliance for free. Window air conditioners and dehumidifiers will also be picked up providing that a primary appliance (full size fridge or freezer) is schedualed for pick up.

Requirements for a primary appliance:

  • Between 10-27 cubic feet
  • In working condition (plugged in 24 hours before pick up)
  • 15 years of age or older

Requirements for a secondary appliance:

  • In working condition
  • 10 years of age or older
  • Window air conditioners must be removed from the window prior to pick up and placed near a power source

For all appointments:

  • An individual 18 years or older must be home during the scheduled appointment time to sign the appliance release form.
  • Ammonia-based refrigerators are not eligible for pick-up

Your appliance pick up location must be located in a single family dwelling, townhouse, duplex, triplex or fourplex.Or located at an apartment or condominium that is over three stories.

For all locations:

  • Must be easily accessible by paved roads and/or roads that are serviced by the municipality in the winter
  • Have a driveway or laneway that is wide enough to accomodate a truck or suitable acess where stopping is allowed by law
  • Have doorways into and within the residence that are wide enough to have the appliance removed
  • Have a clear pathway to the appliance that is large enough to accomodate two removal technicians and a dolly

All apartments and condominium over three stories must also have:

  • An accessible driveway or laneway with a height clearance of 12'6'' (3.81 metres)
  • An elevator (preferably a padded 'service elevator') booked for the date and time of the appointment
  • Landlord/superintendent approval of pick up
