Check with your local pharmacy to see if they will accept unwanted or expired pills, creams, lotions, salves, cough syrups and other medication for proper disposal. Needles (syringes) also need to be disposed of correctly. Several pharmacies will accept needles that are properly sealed and labeled in hard plastic collection containers available to buy at most drug stores. Call your local drug store for this service too. Many types of medicines for people, pets, and farm animals can be dropped off at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot. Some provinces and states have developed pharmaceutical take-back programs involving manufacturers/distributors and pharmacies. We are looking for information about this program in this jurisdiction.
