About

Whenever possible, flush pet feces so they are properly processed in the sewage treatment system. A few varieties of flushable kitty litter are now available, with some types fully biodegradable and safe to use with septic systems.

Another alternative is a pet waste digester. These backyard bins provide a safe place for decomposition, and keep pet waste out of the garbage.

Large pet food bags are considered to be landfill and are not recyclable in your Blue Box or recycling depot containers. Write to your favourite pet food company to ask for recyclable packaging!

Certain pet care products such as flea powders, sprays and vet prescribed medicines are considered hazardous waste and should be dropped off at the Peterborough City/County Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Depot at 400 Pido Road or the seasonal MHSW sites free of charge. For locations and hours of operation call County of Peterborough Environmental Services at 705-775-2737 or visit www.county.peterborough.on.ca.
